NHVRINweb lets you query for specific estimates (number of cases) or rates (number of cases in relation to total events). Both queries work similarly. First, select a specific time period and any demographic or vital record characteristics you wish to focus on. Then, Click the button. Results from your query will be displayed in a graph that may be printed or you can download the resulting data. How to.....
Once you have selected the type of event (birth, death, marriage or divorce) you can open the pull-down lists for the different parameters and Click on your choice. Multiple choices may be selected in parameter lists after choosing the variable name and holding the Ctrl key down while clicking on individual items or holding the Shift key when clicking on the first and last item of a continuous list. NOTE: Queries with the default parameter of "ALL" selected for all variables will produce a grand total for all of the parameter for the time period selected. For example, selecting specific parameters will produce an estimate or a rate for a narrower subset such as selecting SEX = MALE to get the number of males in the population you are looking at, or RACE = WHITE to get the number of white males in your selected event. Selecting SEX = MALE, RACE = WHITE, and LOCATION COUNTY = BELKNAP will produce query results specific to the number of males in the event you are interested in that are white and reside in Belknap county. TIP: Some variable names have popup displays that describe more details about a specific parameter.
One of the more robust selection tools you can use in the NHVRINweb site is the advanced death query. The ICD classification system for cause of death has a hierarchical structure with major group, group, and subgroup categories expressed in 3 digit alpha numeric codes, respectively. Individual causes are coded to the maximum detail level possible in the categories that are presented. The top grouping level is always the sum of all of its subcategories.
NOTE: Because using the ICD coding structure requires expertise in discovering and selecting ALL of the specific causes within all of the death catagories, individual categories may not have a complete complement of subcategories of a specific cause. The user should have some familiarity with the coding structure prior to reporting any results from this system. TIP: Click and remember! The hash mark indicates that some or all codes have been selected along a tree branch. Only one branch within a division is visible at a time. Remember what you select and verify your selections in the results output table.
Use the “Grouping Options”, you can choose from pull-down lists for columns and rows to produce a table of parameters. Up to three categories may be selected by using the First Major, Second Major and Sub Group Category lists. NOTE: The grouping option feature produces tables similar to the common CROSS-TAB output from many statistical programs. If SEX were selected as the first grouping option, the results table would have estimates for males and females, and include a grand total. If, in addition, AGE GROUP were selected as the second grouping option, the results table would have estimates for males by age group with a subtotal for males, similar estimates for females. If AGE GROUP were the first option selected and SEX the second option, the estimates would be the same as in the preceding table, but the order of estimates would be rearranged. A Second Category may be selected with no First Major Category selected.
Click the button to submit your query. Queries typically take several seconds to run. TIP: Queries with three grouping options require the longest calculation times.
The results table includes a list of your specific query parameters. You will find that simply practicing running queries is the only way to become proficient in understanding the limits of file suppression and the logic of grouping one parameter along with another. The data that populates NHVRINweb contains many interesting pathways in getting to an answer to your questions. Please proceed with caution and consult with our Division staff if you experience difficulties. All NHVRINweb output pages are printable using your browser print function. There are no frames used in this webpage. TIP: Some tables may require your browser to be set to print in landscape mode (change your settings under the browser menu File-Page setup). You may select several output options to determine the format of the query results. The output buttons are located between the Query Parameters section and the query result section. You will see 3 icons that depict 3 file types, and these 3 types are:
TIP: Before downloading the output files, PRINT your results page! The output files do not contain the query parameters, and they are data only. At the bottom of the results page, there is a button titled “New Query”. Either use this button or use your browser's Back button to run a new query. TIP: If you use the Back button, your previous parameter selections may be retained (depending on your browser setup). Use the “Clear Selections” button at the bottom of the query page to reset all parameters to their default values. Not all subcategories are displayed when using the Grouping Options feature (e.g., selected Group by sex, but results only list males): You probably restricted all results by choosing an individual parameter such as Sex = Male then used Group by = Sex in the current or a previous query. Check all query parameters selected (the Group By feature does not override other selected parameters that restrict the query). Right side of result table doesn't print properly: Select the Printer Friendly HTML output type, try setting your browser to print in landscape mode (e.g., under File-Page setup), or download the results and print from a spreadsheet or word processing program. You received a "Timeout" or other error message instead of a results table: You may need to log in again and repeat your query. |
